It's the last day of the year!!

Hello hello *I'm blowing imaginary kisses to my lovely readers.. I mean today is the last day of the year and my second December 31st post on blogosphere.  I feel so emotional typing this mhen but I'll be fine like I'm fond of saying.

So before I go over how the year 2014 was for me,  I'll like to talk about Nigerians and giving unsolicited advise.

Yesterday I took my cousin out and we had to wait till it was our turn so while waiting,  she started playing candy crush (in other news my candy crush madness is back) and one of the members of staff happened to walk by that moment and he saw her playing candy crush(I'm sure he peeped into her phone which is rude) then he started yelling that children children of these days don't know anything more than game,  he was like this tab is a computer,  try to find other uses of it and at that point I was activating my madness but I stayed calm somehow. When he was done I told my cousin to continue playing her game as he was not the one who bought the tab for her after all I can decide to buy a device and use it for games only,  shey na me get my money?

After that incidence my mind flashed back to the fact that in Nigeria some people will decide to carry your matter on their head like someone selling gala in hold up by giving "free advise".  I mean people will just walk up to you and tell you "you are too fat,  you should lose weight" like I told them that I don't like my size 8 or "Seyon you hang out with guys too much,  people will think you are loose".  Here is breaking news; Seyon doesn't care about your opinion of her!!
My "mind your business" look

Now I'm sure I'm not the only one who receives free and unsolicited advise right?  Got an experience that you'd like to share? The comment section is waiting.

So my year in review *phew*

This year was quite eventful,  I saw and experienced the good,  the bad,  the ugly and the most beautiful.

In February I did my final defence,  I was supposed to go for NYSC but my department wasn't mobilized so I had to wait till August.
In March, I started working and I was teaching till July when I resigned to go and serve my country. I was eventually posted to Sokoto on the border of Sahara desert and Niger Republic and I refused to redeploy (dunno where that resolve came from) and it's not been a bed of roses but life is not a bed of roses and even if it is,  there is no rose no matter how beautiful without a thorn.

My high point of 2014 was meeting lovely people on blogosphere and I cherish the relationship we have outside this blog.  Those blog visitors who have gone awol,  I hope they are fine especially Mr anonymous ; it's been a year without a trace of him on any blog.

God was very faithful this year,  I had many challenges that I know if it was left to me I won't be able to handle but you remember he said he had our names engraved on his palms?  God didn't allow me ask  him if he was alive.  For that I'm very grateful.

It's been a glorious year for me and I hope 2015 is better!

PS: all pictures were taken with my phone so pardon me if it's not so clear when viewing with a PC.

How did the year go?

I'm back like I never left!

*tiptoes in* *looks around* Good morning good people *bats eyelashes* I'm so sorry I went AWOL (I can hear some people saying she keeps going off on us and apologizing).  I've had my hands full since I came into Lagos.  You see I actually put up a post that I was going on leave *side eye* and when I clicked publish,  I got a mail notifying me it had been updated but I really didn't know network was playing tricks on me *sad face*

OK,  my first ever best friend got married on Saturday and I was among the bridal train so that's what has been keeping me off blogging because I had to stay with her without distraction.

The wedding was the bomb,  I mean it was amaze balls and I had fun!  But the flip side is that I broke down yesterday because of stress but you know say actor no day die for film so I shall bounce back sooner than you expect.

I know I'm behind but it wouldn't hurt to know how you spent your holidays and if you've got plans for the new year so let's talk.

Beautiful innit?

The last time I saw this girl she was a baby!

Erm I almost forgot to share this; remember how I've been whining I needed a new phone after I was mugged and how I asked Santa that all I wanted was a phone?  You see I've always heard that wishes come true but it has never happened to me, I mean I hardly get gifts but this Xmas,  my father bought a phone for me!!!!  I was shocked because my father bought a phone for me last some 3 years ago and subsequently I've been saving to buy my phones myself.  I was too shocked to talk and guess what?  I got a wristwatch too!!!!!!  It can only get better dearies.

Lyrics of the day

TITLE: Joy To The World

AUTHOR: Isaac Watts

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the world, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Grammar 101

Good morning lovelies, last week we looked at "a" and "an" wrongly ommited with countable nouns. Today, we are taking our lessons on articles a step further by looking at "the" wrongly used.

"The" is a definite article and errors frequently occur where the definite article is concerned because most, if not all nouns must sometimes be preceded by the definite article and at other times must not. We'll run through this lesson this week and next week.

1. LOVE
WRONG: The love is a virtue few people really practise.
CORRECT: Love is a virtue few people really practise.

2. TRANSPORT
WRONG: We are neglecting the railways and spending too much on the road transport.
CORRECT: We are neglecting the railways and spending too much on road transport.

3. SOCIETY
WRONG: The society disapproves of those who do not respect its traditions.
CORRECT: Society disapproves of those who do not respect its tradition.

"The" can however be used with "society" when it has a capital "S" and means a professional body or a club, etc.

The Society will be obliged to you for your annual subscription.

4. DEFENCE
WRONG: The superpowers spend colossal sums of money on the defence.
CORRECT: The superpowers spend colossal sums of money on defence.

5. ADMINISTRATION
WRONG: I loathe the administration, I prefer teaching.
CORRECT: I loathe administration, I prefer teaching.

Lyrics of the day

TITLE: I WOULD LIKE TO SEE YOU AGAIN
ARTISTE: DON WILLIAMS
I was sitting here thinking about some old times
Some old times, some old friends
And suddenly it came across my mind
I would like to see you again.

Remember how we used to walk and talk
Walk and talk, holding hands
We said we love each other, I recall
We made a lot of future plans.

But the years have come and gone
And a whole lot has happened since then
But tonight your memory's awful strong on my mind
And I would like to see you again.

It's funny how a feeling will come back
It'll come on back, make you blue
Cause I just saw a picture in my mind
About a time of me and you.

But the years have come and gone
And a whole lot has happened since then
But tonight your memory's awful strong on my mind
And I would like to see you again.

Yes the years have come and gone
And a whole lot has happened since then
But tonight your memory's awful strong on my mind
And I would like to see you again...

Nobody was born dull

Hello awayu *in Olamide's voice* so my holiday starts today and my bag is packed already; Temmy, Dr, Chuka...... I'm coming home oh *bats eyelashes* and even though I'm not staying long I hope to see some of my lovely blog visitors.

Today is actually a lazy day for me and when I woke up I wasn't sure I wanted to post anything but I came up with something eventually and this will be a quick post.

I'm sure some of you know I love teaching and I've been doing holiday teaching jobs since I was 16. So far, I've come across several children with different learning capability.

In the school where I serve, many of the children are labelled "dull", "stupid" because they don't catch up quickly etc and it pains me when I hear such.

I remember in 2008 when I was teaching in a primary school, one particular boy was the slowest and the other teacher was impatient with him so I picked interest in him (when I teach, I look out for the weak students) and I started dedicating my free period to helping him catch up with his peers. Within one week, there was a change and his mother came to school to see the wonder teacher that helped Muh'd and I patiently explained to her that Muh'd was a slow learner.

You see, I'm quite a slow learner too so I understand and I can emphatise with slow learners but society expects everybody to learn at the same pace forgetting all fingers are not equal. The last job I had before NYSC opened my eyes the more. Within three days I classified the fast and slow learners and I patiently started doing my bit. At the end of third term, the child that was 18th in second term came first and when I was computing the average, I was shocked and I calculated it five more times but it was the same. Even the head teacher said I did chuachua and I showed him the child's script and I can't describe the look on his face. In fact, the management said after service, my slot is still waiting for me and while I'm not bragging, I know how parents call me to bless me for helping their children because once I discover what the problem is I call the attention of the parent to it and profer solutions while doing my bit and it's been working so far.

I know no parents likes to have a child that is not doing too well at school but parents and even elder siblings should realize that there are different learning methods and what works for A might not work for B. When you try 1+1=2 and the child is not getting it, bring the example home. Say 1barbie doll+ 1barbie doll= 2barbie dolls, that way they can relate to the examples and it even makes learning fun. When it comes to -5+2=-3, you could say if I borrow you 5naira today and you pay me 2 naira, it leaves you with 3 naira debt and when you borrow it is -, when you pay it is +, that way you bring practical examples home and the kids can relate in the head. I made maths interesting for my kids that even time that gives most Nigerian kids headache was fun for us!

We should stop the prejudice; calling kids dull, stupid and so on is demoralizing. Don't compare kids either, we were not born with the same abilities afterall some of us forming smart now used to score zero when we were at the stage our younger ones or pupils are in now. I do not believe anybody is dull, what we have are slow learners!

Despise not the days of little beginnings

Inakwana? Antashi lafiya? Hehehe that's me rapping hausa *shines teeth* inakwana means how are you and the reply is lafiya meaning fine while antashi lafiya means hope you are fine and the reply is lafiya kalau meaning fine no problem.
Oya today is not hausa 101, I just felt like showing off a little and tell you what lovelies, the weather here is something else! I mean Ella can testify that the harmattan is something else. You need to see the way I dress like I'm going to space. Even the air is so dry and I heard the cold has not started yet oh!! Choi

In other news, school vacates today but the flipside is that we are resuming on the 29th of December, 2014. Not reasonable yeah? Well, it's a muslim state and they have celebrated their islamic new year, infact that day was a public holiday but as for me, I'm already packing and by God's grace I shall be on my way home by weekend. I can't wait to be in Lagos really! My first bff ever is getting married and I'm part of her bridal train....nne I can't wait!

Oya enough of my preamble. Today we'll be discussing "the days of little beginnings".

Zechariah 4:10a (I'm sure some people don't know where that is in their bible *eyeing somepeople*) says "For who hath despised the day of small things? For. They shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven".

Few months after I moved here, I started thinking of how to make extra income and since I'm not in love with buying and selling, I remembered I'm good at impacting knowledge so I printed flyers and started distributing for extra mural lessons; some people were laughing at me asking me how much I'll make from that but I didn't allow it dampen my spirit. Well, I told one that no matter how small the money is, it will augument my little income because everybody knows corpers are always broke before 15th of the month and this state doesn't pay us till 5th of the next month (so my December salary will be paid circa 5th Jaanuary 2015!).

Many of us see NYSC aas a flexing period but seriously, I see it as a period you can make money. While I'm not saying you should abandon your place of primary assignment but you can use your free period to take home lesson, do a trade (sell clothes, recharge card, etc) and since rome was not built in a day, don't expect to break even the first time. Ask Dangote and the likes, I'm sure it business didn't look good when they started but look at them today sitting atop multi million naira empire.

Remember, if you are faithful and dedicated when handling a small business you will also do same when handling a large business.

Thoughts?

TITLE: POWER OF LOVE

The whispers in the morning
Of lovers sleeping tight
Are rolling like thunder now
As I look in your eyes

I hold on to your body
And feel each move you make
Your voice is warm and tender
A love that I could not forsake

'Cause I am your lady
And you are my man
Whenever you reach for me
I'll do all that I can

Lost is how I'm feeling lying in your arms
When the world outside's too
Much to take
That all ends when I'm with you

Even though there may be times
It seems I'm far away
Never wonder where I am
'Cause I am always by your side

We're heading for something
Somewhere I've never been
Sometimes I am frightened
But I'm ready to learn
Of the power of love

The sound of your heart beating
Made it clear
Suddenly the feeling that I can't go on
Is light years away

Uses of egg shell

Hello lovelies, how has our week been so far? hope we are preparing for the xmas because I'll be visiting as many people as I can visit oh *bats eyelashes* and hope santa has not forgotten my phone request either?

Anyway, today we'll be looking at the uses of eggshell because I'm pretty sure all of us eat eggs every other day and we dispose the shells. I'm sure after reading this we'll find uses for the shells.

1. Compost for Naturally Fertilized Soil
Eggshells quickly decompose in the compost pile and add valuable calcium and other minerals to the soil in the process.

2. Nontoxic Pest Control in the Garden
Scatter crushed eggshell around your plants and flowers to help deter plant-eating slugs, snails and cutworms without using eco-unfriendly pesticides.

3. Less Bitter Coffee
Add an eggshell to the coffee in the filter, and your morning coffee will be less bitter. The spent coffee grounds, eggshell and bio-degradable filter are then conveniently ready for the compost pile.

4. Splendid Seedling Starters
Fill biodegradable eggshell halves with potting soil instead of using peat pots to start seedlings for the garden. And an egg carton on the windowsill is the perfect way to start a dozen tomato seedlings in shells before transplanting to the garden.

5. Eco-friendly Household Abrasive
Shake crushed eggshells and a little soapy water to scour hard-to-clean items like thermoses and vases. Crushed eggshells can also be used as a nontoxic abrasive on pots and pans.

8. Natural Drain Cleaner
Keep a couple of crushed eggshells in your kitchen sink strainer at all times. They trap additional solids and they gradually break up and help to naturally clean your pipes on their way down the drain. Do not flush the crushed shells down the drain though as it will get blocked by the particles.

9. Membrane Home Remedies
The super-thin membrane inside the eggshell has long been used as a home remedy for a wide range of ailments, from healing cuts to treating ingrown toenails.

10. Treat Skin Irritations
Dissolve an eggshell in a small jar of apple cider vinegar (takes about two days) and use the mixture to treat minor skin irritations and itchy skin.

11. Egg on Your Face
Pulverize dried egg shells with a mortar and pestle, then whisk the powder in with an egg white and use for a healthful, skin-tightening facial. Allow the face mask to dry before rinsing it off.

TITLE: IT WILL RAIN
ARTISTE: BRUNO MARS

If you ever leave me, baby,
Leave some morphine at my door
'Cause it would take a whole lot of medication
To realize what we used to have,
We don't have it anymore.

There's no religion that could save me
No matter how long my knees are on the floor (Ooh)
So keep in mind all the sacrifices I'm makin'
To keep you by my side
To keep you from walkin' out the door.

'Cause there'll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There'll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same, if you walk away
Everyday it'll rain, rain, ra-a-a-ain

I'll never be your mother's favorite
Your daddy can't even look me in the eye
Ooh, if I was in their shoes, I'd be doing the same thing
Sayin' "There goes my little girl
Walkin' with that troublesome guy"

But they're just afraid of something they can't understand
Ooh, but little darlin' watch me change their minds
Yeah for you I'll try, I'll try, I'll try, I'll try
I'll pick up these broken pieces 'til I'm bleeding
If that'll make you mine

'Cause there'll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There'll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same, if you walk away
Everyday it'll rain, rain, ra-a-a-ain

Oh, don't you say (don't you say) goodbye (goodbye),
Don't you say (don't you say) goodbye (goodbye)
I'll pick up these broken pieces 'til I'm bleeding
If that'll make it right

'Cause there'll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There'll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
And just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same, if you walk away
Everyday it'll rain, rain, ra-a-a-ain

Lyrics of the day

TITLE: LONG DISTANCE
ARTISTE: BRANDY

There's only so many songs
That I can sing to pass the time
And I'm running out of things
To do to get you off my mind
All I have is this picture in a frame
That I hold close to see your face everyday

With you is where I'd rather be
But we're stuck where we are
It's so hard, you're so far
This long distance is killing me
I wish that you are here with me
But we're stuck where we are
It's so hard, you're so far
This long distance is killing me

It's so hard, it's so hard
Where we are, where we are, you're so far
This long distance is killing me
It's so hard, it's so hard
Where we are, where we are, you're so far
This long distance is killing me

Now the minutes feel like hours
And the hours feel like days while I'm away
You know right now I can't be home
But I'm coming home soon, coming home soon
All I have is this picture in a frame
That I hold close to see your face everyday

With you is where I'd rather be
But we're stuck where we are
It's so hard, you're so far
This long distance is killing me
I wish that you were here with me
But we're stuck where we are
It's so hard, you're so far

Can you hear me crying?
Can you hear me crying?
Can you hear me crying?
Oh, oh, oh

With you is where I'd rather be
But we're stuck where we are
So hard, so far
This long distance is killing me
I wish you are here with me
But we're stuck where we are
So hard, so far
This long distance is killing me

It's so hard, it's so hard
Where we are, where we are, you're so far
This long distance is killing me
It's so hard, it's so hard
Where we are, where we are, you're so far
This long distance is killing me

There's only so many songs
That I can sing to pass the time..............

I know I'm grown because

*skips in* *grabs megaphone* hello family!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy today, I mean since yesterday actually. You know after yesterday's post, Mannie and my lovely Tibs called me (I don't know how I'll ever repay Tibs) and I was fighting back tears as Tibs and I were talking (I could be a baby sometimes). I'm so happy we're back on track and well, K suddenly started acting nice but I'm not buying that niceness jare.

An idea came to my mind and that's how this post came about. Everyday we used the word grow; grow up, stop acting immature etc so today we'll be looking at habits or attitudes we used to exhibit when we still had some growing up to do that thankfully we have dropped. Leggo

As a kid, I had habits that was bliss to me, some you don't want to know but looking back to the years gone by, sometimes I ask myself what I was thinking when I was happily indulging in them.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has been through that phase, in fact, the passage of that phase is "growing up". So I'm going to list some things that I've stopped which are pointers to the fact that I'm grown. Feel free to tag yourself.

  1. I know I'm grown because I no longer add water to my Fanta to make it last.
  2. I know I'm grown because I don't run away when I see injection *lmao*
  3. I know I'm grown because I no longer say I want to eat when I know it's just the meat I want and not the food.
  4. I know I'm grown because I no longer throw unnecessary tantrums.
  5. I know I'm grown because I don't play with barbie doll anymore! Hehehe
  6. I know I'm grown because I no longer swallow toothpaste when I'm brushing.
  7. I know I'm grown because I no longer wear Mary Amaka (lmao! Those gowns with bag and saucer like hat).
  8. I know I'm grown because I no longer write my name on a paper and fix inside my pen (hehehe! The fear of petty thieves in school was the beginning of wisdom).

Your turn!

P.S Christmas is in few days time and hmmm, since I was born I've never received a christmas gift *wipes tears* so this Christmas, all I want is a phone *bats eyelashes*. I trust God that Santa won't forget me *smiles*

Lyrics of the day

TITLE: THE COLOUR OF LOVE
ARTISTE: BILLY OCEAN

If I had to paint a picture
To show the world how true love can really be
I would use the brightest colours
To create a vision of harmony

It would be a reality
Cause it's only what's inside of my heart
You would see I've always loved you
Right from the very start

Tell me what is the colour of love, what do you see
Is it warm, is it tender when you think of me
I see the colour of love when I'm thinking of you
As a picture perfect painting of a love forever true

The colours of the rainbow
Turn grey whenever you're so far away
It changes like the seasons
You're the reason it happens that way

What you see are colours of emotion
Reflecting what I feel deep inside
Now I'd like to take a look
At emotions that you hide

Tell me what is the colour of love, what do you see
Is it warm, is it tender when you think of me
I see the colour of love when I'm thinking of you
As a picture perfect painting of a love forever true

And oh, though many may try to keep us apart
Oh the colours that I see in you
Will shine a light to see us through
No matter what the world will do, I'll always love you

Tell me what is the colour of love, what do you see
Is it warm, is it tender when you think of me
I see the colour of love when I'm thinking of you
As a picture perfect painting of a love forever true

What is the colour of love, oh tell me, tell me
Oh I wanna know, I wanna know
I see the colour of love when I'm thinking of you
As a picture perfect paining of a love forever true

Cold war

Hello lovelies, how was our weekend? I trust we had a fantastic one. Well, for me I'm not sure I did and I'm not too happy today either. I know we're supposed to continue the Character counts series but I'll be making a change ( just for today I promise).

Oh well, I said I'm not happy yeah? Here is how the story goes.

I have two roomies, let's call them K and J. Today I'll be focusing on K.

I noticed when she moved into the room that she was quite annoying but I choose to ignore. On a good day I am very vocal but since I started my youth service I've been selectively quiet. When people say I am quiet and I tell them I'm not they don't believe but that's not the focus for today.

The NYSC scheme is for graduates of Nigerian origin, both local and foreign trained who are less than thirty years old but I stumbled on the fact that K is in her late 30s. After that discovery, I could tell why she behaved in certain ways and if I was indifferent about some attitude of hers before, I became VERY indifferent on one hand and quite sympathetic on the other hand.

Few weeks ago, batch C corps members came around and since the lodge is full, there was a minor reshuffling for the time being till they were done with their documentation so J and I were allocated to join the batch A (we are batch B) and that was how it all began.

The girl that was supposed to sleep on my bed eventually left as she had alternative arrangement outside so I went back to my room leaving me with K and one batch C. Before night fall she started giving me attitude, she was puffed up but I was still trying to joke with her, when I saw it wasn't working I decided to blank her.

The next morning, she did not reply my greetings, she started nagging as usual and that was it for me! I moved her to the section of my heart where ignored people occupy. It went on for say three weeks (it is still on though) then she started telling people that she helps me but when I was allocated another room I couldn't say no and I did a mental calculation but couldn't point to any help she rendered me, she said lots of rubbish too but since I couldn't see what offence I commited I've been carrying on happily. Then she fell ill.

Two days ago, J called both of us (K and I) and started talking about how K would rather report J when she offends her instead of telling her and I was just listening silently. When J mentioned the fact that K went to report us that she fell ill and we couldn't tell her sorry or ask what the problem was, I became irritated and told her point blank that since she woke up one day and decided to start a cold war with me for no apparent reason ( I do not see the big deal in the fact that we were reshuffled plus I eventually slept in my room oh!) Then there was no reason she deserved my care because to me that would be like me playing to the gallery or doing eye service. I think that calmed her down a bit and she's been trying to offer petty services to me (for example I washed and hung it out and she brought them in for me) but really, it baffles me when someone who is well over 11 years older than me will be behaving like a baby! Truly age is not maturity.

Lovelies, that is the situation I found myself in oh! That's what is making me unhappy. Any advise for me? How do I handle her because I've never met someone this immature, I mean at an age where one should have been making money or thinking of ways to become a better person but that fellow chooses to act like a kid, I don't know what to do or how to handle it because like my people will say, "leyin aponle, abuku lo kan" meaning after respecting you enough, it is disgrace that follows.

TITLE: SHINE LIKE A STAR
ARTISTE: ASWAD

Ooh aah ooh ooh ooh ooh aah
Ooh aah ooh ooh ooh ooh aah

Come on and shine shine, shine like a star ah-ha
Shining so bright ah-ha like the star that you are ah-ha
Oh oh oh oh shine shine into the future ah-ha
Spreading your light ah-ha wherever you are ah-ha

I burn like a fire left in the rain
As I run the race, oh yes I feel the pain
From the resistance I'm feeling the strain
Now the realization is that we are all born the same

I reach for the moon and I reach for the stars ooh ooh ooh
With the strength from within me yeah, the further and faster I run
Stretching my sinews to the bone ooh
Achieving all goals that I seek, I know I must do it alone ooh ooh ooh

When they said I'd never make it
I found strength from within ooh
'Cause it is there if you seek it
So you can get it if you really want so

Shine shine, shine like a star ah-ha
Shining so bright ah-ha like the star that you are ah-ha
Oh oh oh oh shine shine into the future ah-ha
Spreading your light ah-ha wherever you are ah-ha

Oh oh oh oh shine
Shine, shine your light
Shine, shine your light, yes we're badder than bad
Nigel Benn, the warrior, called the dark destroyer
Eubank, simply the best, nobody alive can touch that
Linford Christle, say nobody alive can catch me
Moving like lightning with enough energy
Shine, shine your light, yes we're badder than bad
Shine, shine your light, yes we're badder than bad
Him a floating like a butterfly, the hurdling man
Yes, me a chat about Colin Jackson
The crowd is roaring, Ian Wright scoring
Boogie man a fe the mighty champion fe we ooh ooh ooh

When they said I'd never make it
I found strength from within ooh
'Cause it is there if you seek it
So you can get it if you really want so

Grammar 101

Last week we looked at "a" and "an" wrongly used with uncountable nouns, today we'll be looking at "a" and "an" wrongly ommited with countable nouns.

1. An accident
Wrong: If you drive at that speed, you will have accident.
Correct: If you drive at that speed, you will have an accident.

2. A bath
Wrong: He went to take bath.
Correct: He went to take a bath.

3. A headache
Wrong: She had headache, and took some tablet.
Correct: She has a. Headache, and took some tablet.

With "toothache" and "stomach ache", "a" nay be either used or left out.

4. A lie
Wrong: I will not tell you lie; he has been sacked.
Correct: I will not tell you a lie; he has been sacked.

5. A name
Wrong: You will not make name for yourself merely by boasting.
Correct: You will not make a name for yourself merely by boasting.

"Make a name" means "earn a good reputation".

6. A surprise, a shock (and other emotions).
Wrong: It gave me great surprise or great shock to hear of your resignation.
Correct: It gave me a great surprise or a great shock to hear of your resignation.

"A" must always be used before "surprise" and "shock" when they are nouns, they are countable. Other words expressing emotion tend to be uncountable.

It gives me great pleasure to be with you today.

But after the verb "be" such nouns become countable, and "a" or "an" may be used:

It was a great pleasure to hear of your son's appointment.

TITLE: HIDING MY HEART
ARTISTE: ADELE

This is how the story went
I met someone by accident
Who blew me away
Blew me away
And It was in the darkest of my days
When you took my sorrow and you took my pain
And buried them away, buried them away

I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I've ever known
You'll disappear one day
So I'll spend my whole life hiding my heart away

Dropped you off at the train station
Put a kiss on top of your head
Watched you wave
And watched you wave
Then I went on home to my skyscrapers
And neon lights and waiting papers
That I call home
I call that home

I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I've ever known
You'll disappear one day
So I'll spend my whole life hiding my heart away
Away, yeah

Woke up feeling heavy hearted
I'm going back to where I started
The morning rain
The morning rain
And though I wish that you were here
On that same old road that brought me here
It's calling me home
It's calling me home

I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I've ever known
You'll disappear one day
So I'll spend my whole life hiding my heart away

I can spend my whole life hiding my heart away

Lyrics of the day

TITLE: CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS
ARTISTE: LUCKY DUBE

Danny got of yellow school bus
Looking so sad today
you see it on his face
Mommy and Daddy have been fighting again
Every time they fight, he's caught in the middle of it all
He has dreams, like every little boy in the world.
But right now his main dream,
Is to get out of here.
Is to see Mommy and Daddy disappear forever.
He doesn't wanna hear those angry voices anymore
Danny, be careful what you wish for
You might just get it.
Be careful Oh Oh Oh

You can choose your friend
but you cannot choose, who you related to.

He goes up to his room
he's not feeling good today
But it's no use telling
nobody listens here
No use complaining
nobody cares around here
Little boys go to sleep and pray
For toys and candy
he prays for one thing
God I need a miracle down here
Will you make Mommy and Daddy disappear forever
Danny, be careful what you wish for
You might just, get it.
Be careful Oh Oh Oh

You can choose your friend,
but you cannot choose who you related to......

TITLE: JAMMIN'

Ooh, yeah! All right!
We're jammin':
I wanna jam it wid you.
We're jammin', jammin',
And I hope you like jammin', too.

Ain't no rules, ain't no vow, we can do it anyhow:
I'n'I will see you through,
'Cos everyday we pay the price with a little sacrifice,
Jammin' till the jam is through.

We're jammin' -
To think that jammin' was a thing of the past;
We're jammin',
And I hope this jam is gonna last.

No bullet can stop us now, we neither beg nor we won't bow;
Neither can be bought nor sold.
We all defend the right; Jah - Jah children must unite:
Your life is worth much more than gold.

We're jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin')
And we're jammin' in the name of the Lord;
We're jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin'),
We're jammin' right straight from Yah.

Yeh! Holy Mount Zion;
Holy Mount Zion:
Jah sitteth in Mount Zion
And rules all creation.

Yeah, we're - we're jammin' (wotcha-wa),
Wotcha-wa-wa-wa, we're jammin' (wotcha-wa),
See, I wanna jam it wid you
We're jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin')
I'm jammed: I hope you're jammin', too.

Jam's about my pride and truth I cannot hide
To keep you satisfied.
True love that now exist is the love I can't resist,
So jam by my side.

We're Jammin' (jammin', jammin', jammin'), yeah-eah-eah!
I wanna jam it wid you.
We're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin',
We're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin', we're jammin';
Hope you like jammin', too.
We're jammin', we're jammin' (jammin'),
We're jammin', we're jammin' (jammin').
I wanna (I wanna jam it wid you) - I wanna -
I wanna jam wid you now.
Jammin', jammin' (hope you like jammin' too).
Eh-eh! I hope you like jammin', I hope you like jammin',
'Cause (I wanna jam it wid you). I wanna ... wid you.
I like - I hope you - I hope you like jammin', too.
I wanna jam it;
I wanna jam it.

uses of oats

Oats are full of fiber and just one cup contains more than 10 grams of protein. This keeps you feeling full and reduces snacking. Savory or sweet oats are the right way to start your day. Though Oats are a nutritional powerhouse, they can also be applied topically for many DIY treatments.

1. Treatment of Acne: Cooked oatmeal is a great natural remedy for treating acne.
Boil some oatmeal till it softens and let it cool for 15 minutes. Apply it on the affected area and rinse off after 10 minutes.
This will absorb and remove excess oil and bacteria from your skin and exfoliate dead skin cells, thus helping to combat acne.

2. Removes Dryness: Oats are effective in fighting dull, flaky dryness as they contain polysaccharides, which become gelatinous in water. They form a fine protective film when applied on skin.
The cereal is effective in addressing dry skin symptoms like itching, rashes, scales, peeling etc.
To get rid of dryness you can make a facial mask by mixing a mashed banana with a cup of ground oatmeal and adding some lukewarm milk. Stir it properly to make it smooth and apply it all over your face for 10-15 minutes.
Rinse off with cold water. This will help in replenishing the skin moisture, keeping it soft and hydrated.

3. Skin Moisturizer: It acts as a natural moisturizer by removing the dead skin cells. It contains beta-glucan that forms a fine film on your skin as well as penetrates deep into the skin to provide much needed deep moisturizing to your skin.
It enhances wound healing and shallow abrasions and improves collagen deposition and activation of immune cells within the skin.
You can add a cup of milk, two cups of oats and a tablespoon of honey to moisturize your skin as well as relax your body.

4. Relieves Itchiness: Oats have anti-inflammatory properties and are suitable for all skin types. They are clinically effective in healing dry and itchy skin.
Oats ground into powder are known as colloidal oatmeal. This powder can be mixed with warm water to form a thick paste and applied over itchy skin to get immediate relief from intense itching.
An oatmeal bath is also effective in healing a number of skin conditions including dry itchy skin. Oatmeal can be used in curing neurodermatitis, a skin disease characterized by itchy or inflamed skin.

5. Skin Lightening: Oats are known for their skin lightening effects as well as improving the skin tone and texture and smoothing out blotchy areas.
It is increasingly used in cosmetology in various skin care products such as body scrubs, soaps, exfoliating creams and general body lotions of reputed brands.

6. Treatment of Poison Ivy or Chicken Pox: Oatmeal has been used for thousands of years for treating eczema, poison ivy, insect bites and skin infections due to its anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-itch properties.
For relieving the itchiness caused by poison ivy or chicken pox or even sunburn, grind oats or oat flour into a fine powder and pour it into a cheesecloth.
Tie it around the bath tub faucet and squeeze out water periodically to have a tepid bath. You can also rub the pouch on the itchy skin.

7. Natural Cleanser: Oats contain natural cleansers called saponins that can remove dirt and oil from the pores without causing irritation. It leaves behind soft and silky skin and reduces pore size.
Oatmeal can form part of your skincare regimen as it is effective in getting rid of dead skin cells that build up in the pores.
Oats can be soaked in water to prepare oat milk which is a natural toner and cleanser. You can store this milk in a bottle in your fridge and apply it on your face with a cotton pad after face wash to smoothen and soften your skin.
Oat bran bath is also effective in cleansing your skin and pores. Place ½ cup of oat groans or rolled oats in some cloth and tie it to make a small bag. Place it in your bathtub and press the bag until the oatmeal milk comes out. This can be used on your body or face instead of soap for mild scrubbing.

8. Skin Protection: The proteins in oatmeal help in maintaining the skin’s natural barrier and protect your skin from harsh chemicals.
It also protects against skin conditions like eczema, rosacea and rashes. The lubricating fats in oats are a great moisturizer that provides a protective layer over the skin to fight UV rays.

9. Treatment of Dry and Itchy Scalp: It is a natural moisturizer and can be applied on hair to get rid of dryness and itchiness .It makes hair soft and shiny. It is often used as an ingredient in shampoos.

10. Treatment of Dandruff: Oatmeal can be combined with other ingredients and applied on your hair before shampooing to get rid of dandruff.

11. Removes Excess Oil and Dirt: Clears the scalp by removing excess sebum, oil and dirt accumulated in the scalp.

12. Combats Hair loss: Hair loss can occur due to a number of reasons such as alopecia, harsh chemical treatments, hormonal imbalance or unhealthy lifestyle. Malnutrition, that is deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals, is the most common cause of hair loss.
Oats contain high amounts of zinc, iron, magnesium and potassium that promote hair growth.
A meal comprising of oats, berries and pumpkin is a rich source of vitamin C, vitamin A as well as other nutrients. Vitamin C prevents scurvy, a disease that can also cause hair loss. Vitamin A, on the other hand, promotes hair development and maintenance.

So what if I refuse to say yes?

So if a girl refuses to date you or have sex with you, you two can't remain friends?

Okay, good morning people...before I typed this topic, I tried to summarise it but I couldn't. I'm actually angry as I'm typing this but oh well, I might just be calm before I'm done typing.

I'm not of the school of thought that believes that a male and a female cannot have anything together (platonic friendship) except they are dating or having sex; if that's the case then we might have to invent a sex-o-meter or something like that.

I grew up among guys so naturally when it comes to my choice of friends, I'm more comfortable with the male folk (of course I have great female friends too that have become sisters more than friends) so right from my growing up days, I've always been the object of gossip among my peers because where guys are gathered, that's where you'll find me.

On the flipside, I didn't give a hoot about the gossips because the truth is I did not have a boyfriend till I was 16 and out of secondary school and in MI's voice *if no one talks about you, then you are nobody*; it was even worse when I got into the university because they couldn't figure me *in eminem's voice* ...I'm digressing here.

I know guys are moved by what they see and it only takes few seconds (or minutes for the benefit of doubt) before guys steer the conversation towards personal stuffs not minding the fact that you two just met but guys, if you ask a lady out and she says no, it doesn't mean you two can't cultivate something else! In fact you two can become best of friends.

Fine, I know some ladies like the chase (most times I'm indifferent though because if I agree to date you today or tomorrow, the bottom line is that I'll still say yes) but please, it's quite annoying when a guy who was the nice, sweet gentleman suddenly starts acting aloof because you said no. How do I believe the feelings you were telling me about weren't surreal?

Thoughts?

How to be brave
How can I love when I'm afraid
To fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt
Suddenly goes away somehow

One step closer

I have died every day
waiting for you
Darlin' don't be afraid
I have loved you for a
Thousand years
I'll love you for a
Thousand more

Time stands still
beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything
Take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath,
Every hour has come to this

One step closer

I have died every day
Waiting for you
Darlin' don't be afraid
I have loved you for a

TITLE: WHEN CAN I SEE YOU AGAIN
ARTISTE: OWL CITY

When can we do this again?
When can I see you again?
When can we do this again?
When can I see you again?
When can we do this again?
When can I see you again?

Switch on the sky and the stars glow for you
Go see the world 'cause it's all so brand new
Don't close your eyes 'cause your future's ready to shine
It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly
Welcome to the rhythm of the night
There's something in the air you can't deny

It's been fun but now I've got to go
Life is way too short to take it slow
But before I go and hit the road
I gotta know, 'til then,
when can we do this again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can I see you again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can we do this again?
Oh oh oh oh
I gotta know, when can I see you again?
(When can I see you again?)

Joined at the hip, yeah your sidekick needs you
Life is a trip down the road that leads you
Look all around at all the mountains you haven't climbed
It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly
Welcome to the rhythm of the night
There's something in the air you can't deny

It's been fun but now I've got to go
Life is way too short to take it slow
But before I go and hit the road
I gotta know, 'til then,
when can we do this again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can I see you again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can we do this again?
Oh oh oh oh
I gotta know,
When can I see you again?

Don't close your eyes 'cause your future's ready to shine
It's just a matter of time, before we learn how to fly
Welcome to the rhythm of the night
There's something in the air you can't deny
So let me know before I wave goodbye

When can I see you again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can we do this again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can I see you again?
Oh oh oh oh
When can we do this again?
Oh oh oh oh

Yeah, it's been fun but now I've got to go
Life is way too short to take it slow
But before I go and hit the road
Tell me when
When can I see you again?
When can I see you again?
Tell me when
When can I see you again?

Self control

Wikipedia defines self control as Self-control is the ability to control one's emotions, behavior, and desires in the face of external demands in order to function in society. It goes on to say that " Self-control is essential in behavior to achieve goals and to avoid impulses and/or emotions that could prove to be negative".

Here are some tips from wikihow on how to exercise self control.

  •  Make a list of the positives and negatives in your life. Write down a list of which areas of your life are suffering and which are prospering then focus on the essentials in order to keep the list brief.

  • Take a look at the areas you suck with and Brainstorm ways to deal with them, for example, if you are failing all of your classes in school, you might need to study or if you are gaining weight at an alarming rate, you may need to sacrifice a few candy bars. Think of causes and solutions to every problem that you write down, then recognize that you are not the only one with this problem.  People often refer to poor self-control when they have problems with diet, exercise, work or study habits, addictions, and emotional behavior. These are all parts of life that many people find difficulty regulating.

  •  Research the area in which you are lacking control. Read books or articles about the area you are having difficulty with. Becoming informed makes it much easier to make the right decision when you're tempted to overdo something. For example, if you want to lose weight, taking the time to read about nutrition and healthy dieting will naturally motivate you and make eating right much more enjoyable. In terms of gaining self-control, knowledge really is power. If you have friends with similar problems, ask them about their own experiences. By comparing notes, you might get tips on the coping mechanisms and strategies that they use. It also helps to have reassurance that struggling with self-control does not make you a weak person.

  • Gradually increase your ability for self-denial. Start small by challenging yourself to control your behavior for a short period of time. For example, if you are addicted to television, try turning it off for one day. Then work up to leaving it off for two days, then longer. If you are struggling with your diet, promise yourself to only eat one dessert item a day. For every decision you make, leave room to gradually increase the level of self-denial.

  • Don't try to break your destructive habit all at once. This is likely to lead to a dramatic "falling   off the wagon" that will leave you feeling depressed and hopeless. Enlist your friends and family to help you. Tell your family to remind you of your goals whenever you fall back into bad behaviors. A friendly reminder is all that's required. Constant nagging will only make you hide and sneak around. Family and friends can also join you in alternative actions when you're having trouble controlling yourself. For example, if your friends are drinking and you're trying to abstain, ask if one of them wouldn't mind joining you in a trip to get some ice cream.

  •  Distract yourself. When you feel the urge to lose your self-control, immediately think of something else you could be doing. Go for a walk. Write a thank you card. Drink a glass of water. This will derail the train of thought and give you time to regain your self-discipline.

  •  Learn how to relax. Part of self-control is learning how to relax and to ease the tension. Research different methods of relaxing your body and mind and decide which best suits you. Consider meditation. Meditation is all about discipline, and the point of it is to discipline your mind to such a state where it remains clear, while positive energy flows through you. You're meant to not anchor yourself to specific thoughts. Practicing meditation may give you a sense of renewed self-disciple, concentration, and happiness. Try deep breathing. This is something you can do wherever you are. Simply close your eyes. Exhale completely. Inhale slowly, counting up to four and hold the breath, counting up to seven. Then release the breath very slowly, counting up to eight.

  • Practice Positive Thinking. Think about what you want to accomplish. Begin each day by visualizing the end result of your efforts. Imagine yourself healthier, happier, and more confident.

  • Keep a diary of your efforts. Think about how you succeeded each day and write down a goal for tomorrow. This will keep you thinking about the future and focused on the positives. Don't beat yourself up for failures. Failure is a part of the process and we all make mistakes. If you lose self-control, take it as a learning experience and think about how to act differently next time.

I'll end by reposting something I did on the 16th of December 2013 titled take control of your actions.

Very often, we find ourselves acting in such a way, projecting ourselves as being something we are not, only in a desperate bid to impress someone. Do you realise that by trying to take control of another person, you are actually exposing your own weakness? By trying to swagger and force a person to think of you as you need him to you are needlessly exposing your weakness and thus sabotaging your position. In such a situation, the person you are trying to impress will simply be in command of you. The minute you want something from someone, you automatically assume a weaker position.

Understand then that the more you crave for a person's good opinion or attention, the less likelihood of your ever receiving it.

The following actions will surely work against you in any situation:
  1.  Going out of your way to impress someone.
  2. Falling all over someone trying to curry favour.
  3. Making meaningless small talk just to be heard.
  4. Trying to be overly concerned about the person's health and well being.
  5.  Hanging on to the person if he was angry or upset with you.
  6. Trying to win the person's approval at all cost.
  7.  Constantly being on the defensive and trying to give explanations for every action.
  8.  Indulging in vacant or harmful gossips.
  9. Always trying to say only nice things to someone though it is actually not your real opinion about the person.

The solution? Try to think before you talk. There will be less chance of sabotaging your position.
Do you feel a certain fear mounting within you? Is that why you fawn, try to impress and in general blabber nonsense? Ah! Then control yourself.
It is better to be a silent listener than to be someone who will make a fool of himself by indulging in all the above actions!

And that's it for our character count series today lovelies! Thoughts?

NYSC diary 3

Today makes it four month I relocated to Northern Nigeria. Oh well, it's been a journey filled with thorn and thistles but here I am......a survivor!

I remember what was on my mind as the plane was making its descent into Sokoto; all I could see was dry land and I was practically rolling my eyes. After circa 18 days in camp, the journey to the (un)known began and I got my first baptism of fire when I was dispossessed of my bag and other valuables * I've still not gotten over it*

When I reported to my PPA, I was unsure of what to expect but then, there is no shortage of classrooms or furniture here.
After series of delay and all, I was assigned to teach JAS3 A-E! Imagine me teaching 5 arms with a minimum of 52 students in each class!! Now don't get me wrong as I like teaching but when you are teaching in a school where English is not understood( everything is ba turechi ie no english), even the assembly is conducted in hausa, then you understand how frustrated and drained I usually am after each lectures because the course I take (Basic Technology) doesn't have much gesticulation to do!

My students and I

Lemme go back on the time machine to my first day at work; as a Lagos babe, I dressed corporate only to find the teachers dressed casually with slippers to top it! I was mad as I brought my office wears and all! I can't write how disappointed and sad I was when I saw the students filing in with very tattered uniforms and flipflops! That was it. When I asked them they said babu kudi ie no money and I made a mental note that even if I wanted to buy toiletries for them, how many will I buy from my meagre 19,000 Salary? Because the truth is many of them do not shower to school. Anyways, this is my 9th week there and I've learnt to turn a blind eye to their dirtiness but believe you me it breaks my heart and the truth is if you flog or reprimand them, they might just stop coming to school as many of them are forced to learn *sigh* the most annoying part is when they be like Mallama Patience, after school na to marry Mata (wife) and I'm like wtf? It's terrible but the educational system here though! In fact I can't write somethings here for my safety.

Where I stay is another cinema! It's filled with manner less people who can't knock before barging into your privacy, it's filled with backstabbing bitches, I mean I hardly use the bitch word so if I use it, then I mean it.....not like anybody stabbed me in the back because I don't have that time for new friends and idle gossips but you know I'll be on my own and X will come gossip Y to me and later I'll see X laughing with Y and I give that knowing smile. In fact the gossip and jealousy here is a story for another day; and my roomies? It never rains but pours *sigh*

Aren't i looking good? *bats eyelashes*

I joined the editorial and publicity group CDS and I got the opportunity to be on Rima FM 97.1 and was it fun? You bet it was! But the studio equipment are so 1900! Anyway that's what I get for being in Sokoto.
CDS is one other stressful place but what can I do?

My first ever CDS. kindly ignore the shapeless Khaki NYSC gave me

my new Khaki

I'm so grateful for the journey so far, God has been faithful; I've not had any serious sickness and it's so unlike me although the harmattan is so harsh that my nose has been bleeding but then, I'll be fine!

My current look

P.S. We've got a new visitor, Austin Uche; I used to stalk him on one of the blogs I used to visit (silent stalking oh) and I was so happy when I saw his comments. Welcome darling, hope you'll stay with us!

ATRISTE: NAT KING COLE
TITLE: UNFORGETTABLE

Unforgettable
That's what you are,
Unforgettable
Tho' near or far.

Like a song of love that clings to me,
How the thought of you does things to me.
Never before
Has someone been more...

Unforgettable
In every way,
And forever more
That's how you'll stay.

That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am
Unforgettable, too.

Unforgettable
In every way,
And forever more
That's how you'll stay.

That's why, darling, it's incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am
Unforgettable, too.

GRAMMAR 101

Hello lovelies, I know it's been eons since we last had our grammar lessons.....let me not start by giving some excuses, in fact, I'm tired of saying sorry myself but thank God I've snapped out of what was on my mind and here we are.

Today we'll be looking at articles. There are two articles in English, the definite article (The) and the indefinite article (a or an) and articles are also known as determiners.

Generally, uncountable nouns must not be preceded by "a" or "an". Let us consider the following examples:

Advice
Wrong: Let me give you an advice, which you may not like to hear.
Correct: Let me give you some advice or a piece of advice, which you may not like to hear.

Note that some nouns can be either countable or uncountable, depending on the meaning. "Advice", for example is uncountable when it means "counsel" as in the example above, but countable when it means "formal notification" in a business context, for example:

The Manager received an advice from the Lagos branch.

Likewise "accommodation" us uncountable when it means "lodgings" but countable when it means "settlement", "compromise", in which case it can be preceded by "an".

Attention
Wrong: Mary needs a medical attention
Correct: Mary needs medical attention

Wrong: Please pay an attention to what I am saying.
Correct: Please pay attention to what I am saying.

Concern
Wrong: The news of the fighting causes us a great concern.
Correct: The news of the fighting causes us concern.

"Concern" cannot be preceded by "a" when it means "anxiety". It may be preceded by "a" when it means "business venture":

His timber company has at last become a great concern.

Harm
Wrong: Your arrogance will do a great harm to your cause.
Correct: Your arrogance will do great harm to your cause.

Hearsay
Wrong: Everyone is talking about their impending divorce, but to me it is all a hearsay.
Correct: Everyone is talking about their impending divorce, but to me it is all hearsay.

Weather
Wrong: Have you ever known a weather like this in December?
Correct: Have. You ever known weather like this in December?

Work
Wrong: She returned to university to do a research work.
Correct: She returned to university to do. Research work.

"Work" is not preceded by "a" when. It means "effort" or "paid employment". It is preceded by "a" when it means "something achieved":

This new play is a work of genius.

..........And that's it for today lovelies! Don't forget to comment and share. X

ARTISTE: BRUNO MARS
TITLE: TALKING TO THE MOON

I know you're somewhere out there
Somewhere far away
I want you back
I want you back
My neighbors think I'm crazy
But they don't understand
You're all I had
You're all I had

At night when the stars light up my room
I sit by myself talking to the moon.
Trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too.
Or am I a fool who sits alone talking to the moon?

Ohoooo...

I'm feeling like I'm famous
The talk of the town
They say I've gone mad
Yeah, I've gone mad
But they don't know what I know
Cause when the sun goes down
Someone's talking back
Yeah, they're talking back
Ohhh

At night when the stars light up my room
I sit by myself talking to the moon.
Trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too.
Or am I a fool who sits alone talking to the moon?

Ahh... Ahh... Ahh...
Do you ever hear me calling?
(Ahh... Ahh... Ahh...)
Oh ohh oh oh ohhh
'Cause every night I'm talking to the moon

Still trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool who sits alone talking to the moon?

Ohoooo...

I know you're somewhere out there
Somewhere far away.....

LYRICS OF THE DAY

TITLE: BOTH SIDES OF THE STORY
ARTISTE: PHIL COLLINS

Find yourself in the gutter in a lonely part of town
where death waits in the darkness with a weapon
to cut some stranger down
sleeping with an empty bottle, he's a sad and an empty hearted man
all he needs is a job, and a little respect
so he can get out while he can

We always need to hear both sides of the story
Both sides of the story

A neighbourhood peace is shattered it's the middle of the night
young faces hide in the shadows
while they watch their mother and father fight
he says she's been unfaithful
she says her love for him has gone
and the brother shrugs to his sister and says "looks like it's just us from now on"

We always need to hear both sides of the story
We need to hear both sides of the story

And the lights are all on, the world is watching now
people looking for truth, we must not fail them now
be sure
before we close our eyes
don't walk away from here
'til you hear both sides

Here we are all gathered in what seems to be the centre of the storm
neighbours once friendly now stand each side of the line that has been drawn
they've been fighting here for years, but now there's killing on the streets
while small coffins are lined up sadly, now united in defeat

We always need to hear both sides of the story

And the lights are all on, the world is watching now
people looking for truth, we must not fail them now
be sure, before we close our eyes
don't walk away from here
'til you see both sides

White man turns the corner, finds himself within a different world
ghetto kid grabs his shoulder, throws him up against the wall
he says "would you respect me if I didn't have this gun
'cos without it, I don't get it, and that's why I carry one"

We always need to hear both sides of the story

GUILT TRIP

When I was in camp (NYSC orientation) I had a doctor friend who apparently had his eyes on me but since he did not say anything, I decided not to think/talk for him and so I acted like I was not aware. We were always together in the clinic, at mammy, he even started teaching me how to play badminton.

Since he wasn't the first person I met on camp, I had other dudes who I was hanging out with too *bats eyelashes* so I had to make out time for each of them and my doctor friend always had this look on his face when he saw me with other dudes. Now we had course to talk about everything and I made it clear I was not in camp to look for a boo and he said the same so I was happy we were on the same page (or so I thought).

The two weeks I spent with him was something else as he wanted to be with me 247 not withstanding my own programme and since the clinic was a convenient place for me to hide to escape the morning jogging, parade and the boring lectures I was enjoying the attention till we left camp. The day we left camp was something else; after our posting letters were handed to us, he saw he was posted to a village (Tambuwal) while I was posted to the capital, his hopes were kind of dashed as he was hoping we were going to be together, so we said our hurried goodbyes and promised to keep in touch. That night things fell apart as my bag was stolen so the next few days was spent running around trying to recover my lost documents. In between the turn of events, I called him and told him the situation of things as we were supposed to hang out before going on leave.

Few days later, we ran into each other at the NYSC state secretariat, while I came to have my ID card replaced, he came to change his posting to town. Immediately he saw me, he started accusing me of not checking up on him, he launched on how he was posted to a bad place, blah blah blah and after he was done I was like so after I told you my bag was stolen, the sorry you will tell me is the village you were posted to and he muttered a weak apology.

That night, he called me and asked to see me (it was say 9pm)and I told him I was sorry I couldn't and he started telling me how I owed him whatever favour he did and he started saying things to make me feel guilty and believe you me, it was not funny as I gave it to him hot.

While I did not intend to bore you with the long and dry introduction, I want y'all to know where I'm coming from because I'm quite sure we all have gone down this lane give or take at some point in our lives but we might not know that it is called 'guilt trip'.

The Urban dictionary (don't I just love this urban dictionary?) defines guilt trip as: 'When someone tries to make you do whatever they want you to so they start making you feel bad about something so then you'll give in and do whatever they want' . It goes further to say 'guilt trip is a trip you should never take. You should feel guilty when you know you have done something you know is wrong. You should set things right if you can or at least try to avoid doing the wrong thing again. t
The main thing is your actions are based on what you think and feel, not on what someone who is trying to manipulate you wants to make you think and feel'.

There are two forms of guilt trips:
  1. A guilt trip that demonizes you: A perfect example of this is the introduction I gave. You do not owe these set of people anything yet they always find a way to put you on the spot. It could be friends who do not call you, I mean you call them often yet the once they manage to ring you, they'll start moaning about how you are a bad person, how you do not reach them often, etc or a relationship where only one person does the reaching out yet if he/she manages to forget once, it becomes an issue.
  2. A guilt trip that casts the tripper in the role of a persecuted victim: You know when you wanted to get into the university and you filled a course other than medicine, law or engineering and your parents went all out on you? how they started to remind you of all what you have done right from when you were a kid, how you never appreciate their effort blah blah blah and how your not reading their choice course will affect their status and you did not have a choice but to accept even when you did know you can't cope? oh well, the high rate of drop outs from med school is a testimony to this. The silent treatment we give people too is a form of guilt trip.

Guilt trip happens everyday albeit slightly but then, it is a form of subtle manipulation and both forms of guilt trips heavily exaggerate the situation and presents a one sided view of rife with blame and simplistic judgement and guilt trip most times rely on "always" and "never" statements with accusations of intentional cruelty or a total lack of caring on your part. They may even be heavily sarcastic.

I'm not an expert in psychology but I think the chief causes of guilt trips are fear, insecurity and low self esteem.
Take the parent that is sending their children on a guilt trip because they refused to obey their wishes, in Nigeria, we know how parents take pride in being being called "mama doc" especially if they have a friend whose child is a medical doctor too; bragging rights you'll say.
As for insecurity and fear, oh well, relying on guilt trip to register your protest might be counter productive as there are many ways of communicating without going down that lane, infact it can backfire if care is not taken and you'll find that you are back to ground zero.

In dealing with guilt trippers, the following tips from www.ehow.com will come handy:
  1. Recognize the cause of the guilt trip. Some people just need someone to pass the buck to but remember that the first step in solving any problem is identifying it.
  2. Stop feeling guilty. Infact feeling guilty will not solve anything and nobody has the right to make you feel guilty, much more feeling guilty for something you know nothing about.
  3. Ask the guilt tripper how they feel, this will help them to stop looking up to you for a solution and focusing on themselves.
  4. Listen to the guilt tripper talk about their feelings, remember a problem shared is half solved.
  5. Since guilt trip is a form of passive aggression, calling them out subtly will help them use assertive methods to solve whatever is bugging them.
  6. Help them deal with the problem constructively.

Remember guilt trip robs relationships and interactions of emotional maturity and honesty and encourages long term resentment.
Ever been guilt tripped? How did you deal?

Much thanks to Everyday life.
