Today we'll be looking at more lessons on "THE" wrongly used; let's go.
WRONG: The singing is a skill one should cultivate.
CORRECT: Singing is a skill one should cultivate.
WRONG: The light travels at a speed of 180,000 miles per second.
CORRECT: Light travels at a speed of 180,000 miles per second.
WRONG: The whole world now accepts that children should go to the school.
CORRECT: The whole world now accepts that children should go to school.
WRONG: When Emeka left his home town, he stopped going to the church.
CORRECT: When Emeka left his home town, he stopped going to church.
'Church' has a capital letter and is preceded by the definite article when it refers to an institution.
He was examining the doctrines of the Church.
The definite article is not however used before 'church' if 'church' is used as an adjective before another noun having generic reference.
She is very much interested in Church affairs.
WRONG: He wants to go to the University after he leaves school.
CORRECT: He wants to go to University after he leaves school.
If there were only one University in the country in question, university would be written with a capital 'U' and 'he wants to go to the University' would be correct.
WRONG: We are now studying the West African geography.
CORRECT: We are now studying West African geography.
