GRAMMAR 101

Hiya dearies... It's 10 days into the new year already *phew* and it's that time for our grammar lessons again.

Today we'll be looking at more lessons on "THE"  wrongly used; let's go.

1. SINGING

WRONG: The singing is a skill one should cultivate.
CORRECT: Singing is a skill one should cultivate.

2. LIGHT

WRONG: The light travels at a speed of 180,000 miles per second.
CORRECT: Light travels at a speed of 180,000 miles per second.

3. SCHOOL

WRONG: The whole world now accepts that children should go to the school.
CORRECT: The whole world now accepts that children should go to school.

4. CHURCH

WRONG: When Emeka left his home town,  he stopped going to the church.
CORRECT: When Emeka left his home town,  he stopped going to church.

'Church' has a capital letter and is preceded by the definite article when it refers to an institution.

He was examining the doctrines of the Church.

The definite article is not however used before 'church' if 'church'  is used as an adjective before another noun having generic reference.

She is very much interested in Church affairs.

5. UNIVERSITY
WRONG: He wants to go to the University after he leaves school.
CORRECT: He wants to go to  University  after he leaves school.

If there were only one University in the country in question,  university would be written with a capital 'U'  and 'he wants to go to the University'  would be correct.

6. GEOGRAPHY
WRONG: We are now studying the West African geography.
CORRECT: We are now studying West African geography.

And that's it for today lovelies,  any question question?
